Victoria mulls opt-out organ donor system
Victoria, AUSTRALIA (ninenews) – A parliamentary committee in Victoria is set to examine whether to implement an opt-out system to help boost organ donation rates across the state.
Politicians will look at the scope for a move towards “presumed consent”, where all Victorians become potential organ donors unless they register a formal objection.

Grieving families often go against the wishes of potential organ donors by refusing to donate their organs.
The measure is one of several donation proposals put forward as part of a year-long review into ways of increasing the number of adults registered as organ donors. Currently, only about one in 10 Victorian adults are on the register.
Across Australia, 1683 people are currently waiting for an organ donation, according to latest statistics from the Australia and New Zealand Organ Donation Registry.
The Herald Sun reports the eight-member Legal and Social Committee will assess national and international donation evidence, the operation of existing systems and disclosure arrangements.
Presumed consent is being introduced in Western Australia and has become standard practice in Spain, France, Belgium and Sweden.
[BTFY comment: it appears that the plan isn't to investigate whether or not this is a good idea, but instead how to implement something that's already semi-decided. There's also no indication of how secure the opt-out system would be from mistakes being made. The automatic organ donor law is being (or has been) introduced in many countries, and while there are arguments on both sides about organ donations, the mandatory donation treats people's bodies as something that society has a presumptuous right to use as it chooses unless one makes a significant effort to refuse the system from having it's way.]
