Homosexual marriage law debate hits Aus parliament

AUSTRALIA (Christian Today Australia) – The Australian Greens, independent MP Andrew Wilkie and an ALP backbencher and have introduced two separate bills into federal parliament to allow same-sex marriage.
The Bills drew sharp criticism from opposition MP’s with Alex Hawke saying the proposed laws attacked the rights of the majority.
“This is an attack on the rights of all those who support marriage, and I believe they are a majority.
“We are talking about a radical proposal to undermine a fundamental social institution that has been the basis of our society for thousands of years, an institution between a man and a woman for the reproduction of children which has formed the basic unit of our society,” said Mr Hawke.
“I believe that a majority of Australians voted in the 2004, 2007 and 2010 elections for the position of both major political parties that there be no amendment to the Marriage Act,” he said.
Stephen Jones, ALP member for Throsby said Australia’s marriage laws had been amended by every single government and the proposal to allow same-sex marriage simply reflects a change in ‘societal norms’.
“I believe that God made us all equal but different—not differently equal,” said Mr Jones.
“The object of the bill is to remove discrimination and advance equality. It will ensure that when same-sex couples make a voluntary commitment to be together for life, to the exclusion of all others, and they choose to have that relationship solemnised, it will be recognised at law in the same way that my marriage is,” he said.
However, Mr Hawke attacked the government for breaking its election promise not change the law to allow same-sex marriage.
“I believe that a majority of Australians voted in the 2004, 2007 and 2010 elections for the position of both major political parties that there be no amendment to the Marriage Act.
“If the Labor Party is now proposing to change its position, of course it must put it to the people—something we know that it does not like to do,” said Mr Hawke.
Green’s MP Adam Bandt said his Bill was about helping to end limits on love and upholding human rights.
