Fred Nile calls for State to stop funding Mardi Gras
SYDNEY, Australia – The Rev Hon Fred Nile MLC, Leader of the Christian Democratic Party, has called on the NSW Government to end State-funded apartheid based on sexual orientation and invest funds that would otherwise have been spent supporting the 2012 Sydney Mardi Gras Festival into infrastructure and services for the benefit of all.

“Our Premier has given personal assurances that his Government will provide significant support for the Sydney Mardi Gras. They will support the festival through funding, by paying the wages of attending Emergency Services personnel and by exempting the parade from the usual charges associated with running such events, said Rev Fred Nile.
“The justification for this, according to the Premier, is that the event provides ‘significant direct economic impact’. What the Premier fails to mention is that a ‘significant’ part of that ‘impact’ is retained within the homosexual community itself. Why should the majority suffer so that a minority can prance semi-naked down our streets – to watch illegal hardcore porn in public? Why isn’t the Government spending the much needed funds on Health, Education, Emergency Services, Transport and Energy Infrastructure? We call on the NSW Government to end this economic apartheid, this discrimination against the majority of hard working citizens who happen to be born heterosexual”, stated Rev Nile.
Rev Nile also submitted the following questions on notice to the Minister for Finance, the Hon Greg Pearce:
– Does the Minister acknowledge that the O’Farrell Government made a pre-election commitment to a greater degree of governmental transparency than that demonstrated by the former government?
– If so, will the Minister provide details of how much the Government and Destination NSW plans to spend in advertising and support for the 2012 Sydney Mardi Gras?
– Does the Minister acknowledge that the alleged revenue raised through the event is predominantly retained within the homosexual community?
– Can the Minister explain why the funds are not being invested for the benefit of all in Health, Education, Emergency Services, Transport or Energy Infrastructure?
